DTC brand news this quarter: what actually mattered

Every quarter throws off a mountain of ecommerce headlines. Most won't change a single thing you do on Monday. A few genuinely will.

This quarter had a clear theme: AI stopped being a talking point and turned up inside your actual ad account and your actual search traffic. Here are the moves worth understanding before you plan the rest of your year, and what each one means for your brand.

Meta started rewriting your ad copy for you

Late in July, Meta began automatically rewriting the headline text baked into your ad images. Its Advantage+ system spins up as many as eight variants while keeping your fonts, colours and layout intact, and it's switched on by default.

What it means for you: your carefully written hook might be getting reworded without you noticing. Check the Branding settings on your account. Some brands will happily take the free testing, others will want to switch it off per creative. Either way, you want to know it's happening before peak, not after.

Meta now grades how varied your creative is

By late August, a new creative diversity score, rated Low, Medium or High, showed up in Ads Manager. It looks at how similar the images and videos inside an ad set are to each other.

What it means for you: Meta is now telling you plainly what it's quietly rewarded for a while. Sameness gets held back, variety gets rewarded. If your score is sitting on Low, treat that as your nudge to widen your angles before Black Friday. We got into this with fourfive's Damian Gosling on the podcast.

Placement controls are disappearing

Meta is phasing out the old placement checkboxes in favour of "placement value rules." Those can cap how much a placement's bid is reduced, but they can't fully exclude a placement the way you used to.

What it means for you: less manual control, more trust in broad delivery. The lever that still moves the needle is creative that holds up wherever it lands, not micromanaging where it shows. If you've built your setup around tight placement exclusions, now's the time to rethink it.

Google turned search into a shopping agent

This was the big one, and the first part has already reached the UK. Google's AI Mode is now live here as a search option: conversational, multimodal, and happy to run several searches to answer a single question. That alone changes how people find products, before anyone clicks a blue link.

The fuller shopping layer is rolling out US-first. Agentic checkout lets people buy inside Gemini without leaving the chat, sponsored placements now sit inside AI answers, and virtual try-on shows apparel and beauty on similar body types. Google has said the universal cart and agentic checkout are live in the US now, with the UK set to follow after Canada and Australia.

What it means for you: don't wait for the buy button to reach the UK to get ready, because the groundwork pays off today. Your product feed is becoming your storefront. Get your Google Merchant Centre data clean and synced, with accurate prices, stock and complete product detail (GTINs, materials, colours, sizes). Shopify brands are largely ready by default; other platforms may need a little setup. Being the product an AI recommends starts with a feed it can trust.

GEO is turning into the new SEO

Off the back of all that, generative engine optimisation, getting your products cited and recommended by AI engines, went from niche jargon to a real line on the plan this quarter.

What it means for you: the job is shifting from ranking on a results page to being the answer an AI gives. Structured data, genuinely useful content, strong reviews and complete product information are how you get picked. It's early, which is exactly why it's worth a look now. The short version

If you only act on four things from the quarter: check whether Meta is rewriting your ad copy, widen your creative before peak, get your product feed clean enough for AI search, and start treating GEO like the SEO of 2027.
