How to tell an AI browser from an AI buyer

If you've looked at your AI traffic lately and not known what to make of it, that's fair. Here's what made it click for us.

Shopify's own numbers show 55% of AI-referred sessions start on a product page, against roughly 20% for organic search. Those arrivals convert nearly 50% higher than organic, with 14% higher order values, and they come out ahead in 23 of 25 categories.

So the landing page tells you who you've got. A product page means the model has already chosen for them and sent them over to collect, while a homepage or blog visit means they've been handed a few options and come to have a look at you.

1. Split the report before you judge the channel

Filter your AI sessions by landing page and score the two groups separately.

Landed on a product page? Treat them as buyers. Conversion and average order value are fair asks, and weak numbers point to a real problem on that page.

Landed on the homepage or a blog? They're checking you out, not buying today. Score them on email sign-ups and repeat visits within thirty days. On same-session conversion, they'll look like a failure, and that's how brands cut a channel that's working.

2. For the browsers, ask for an email, not a sale

This half arrives on borrowed trust, which is fragile. Quantum Metric asked 1,500 shoppers across the US and UK: AI-discovery visitors are twice as likely to abandon on friction, and 80% won't come back after a bad experience. The upside is just as big, with 98% saying they repeat-buy from brands an AI recommended.

As Julie Geller of Info-Tech Research Group put it: "Customers are looking to quickly confirm that the recommendation was justified... If that validation isn't obvious, confidence drops fast."

So there are two things worth doing. Put whatever the model said about you near the top of the page with the proof beside it, and swap the hard sell for something actually worth an email address, like the size guide or the comparison they came looking for.

3. For the buyers, get out of their way

This half has already made their mind up, so every extra step you put in front of them is pure tax.

18% of shoppers abandon because they were forced to create an account, 17% because checkout was long or complicated. Fixing that is worth a 35% conversion lift for the average large store.

Express payment is the other easy win. Shopify's own data has Shop Pay converting up to 50% better than guest checkout, with roughly 16% higher order values, and simply offering it lifts lower-funnel conversion by about 5% even when shoppers don't use it.

Then move your reviews and returns policy up next to the Add to Cart button, and take the blog links off the product page. This visitor didn't come to browse you.

The Takeaway

Treat AI as two audiences rather than one number, and give each half what it came for. Proof and a reason to leave an email for the browsers, and the shortest possible path to paying for the buyers.

Count your checkout fields this week, and if you're anywhere near twenty-three, that's your Q4 project.

Brand Retreat: Gran Canaria

27th to 30th October 2026 | Gran Canaria

If you've ever wished you could shut the laptop for a few days and properly think about where your brand is heading, this is the one we'd point you towards.

At the end of October, twenty founders and operators are heading to Gran Canaria for four days of proper strategy work. It isn't a conference, and it definitely isn't time off.

A full day is devoted to a hands-on workshop on the growth levers driving retail right now, with no one interrupting you while you're in it. Around that you've got roundtables built on the problems everyone arrives with, wellness sessions if you fancy them, and the dinners where the sharpest thinking usually happens anyway.

We cap it at 20 and curate who's in the room: founders, C-suite operators, tech innovators, and investors from the community.

Everything is covered once you land, so the only thing to sort is your flight.Applications are reviewed as they come in, and community members go first.

The bit that happens between the events

Running a brand gets lonely when every decision lands on you, which is why our private Slack Community, sponsored by Brightpearl, is where the DTC Live crowd carries on talking between events.

It's founders and operators only, so people post things they'd never put on LinkedIn. Members also get first access to our invite-only dinners and experiences.

In Other News…

Shein lists in Hong Kong at $26bn: The fast-fashion group debuted on Tuesday after raising $1.7bn, at roughly a quarter of its 2022 peak, with tariffs and Temu named as the drag and Bloomberg Intelligence forecasting full-year sales growth of 3.4%.

What this means for you: public markets have just repriced growth-by-volume at the cheap end, which opens room for brands competing on quality and service to make that argument to customers trained on price alone.

UK shoppers are planning a leaner Q4: New research from Epsilon puts UK spending across Black Friday and the Christmas sales at £17.9bn, with nearly three-quarters of shoppers saying they'll cut back on non-essentials, so the money is there, but it's going to fewer places.

What this means for you: brands that do well in a year like this tend to settle their Q4 offer in September rather than reaching for a sitewide discount in the third week of November, and early access for your best customers or a bundle that lifts order value travels much further than cutting margin.
